Last week my mom saw a mother black bear and her cub crossing the road just a fourth of a mile from her home. Mom called me all excited about what she had seen. I was excited too. I began to think, "wouldn't it be cool to see a bear and her cub?" Cooler yet, "wouldn't be great if I could get a picture for my blog?" So yesterday, after I dropped off the youngsters for VBS, I took Zach to my mom's house so that he could finish some yard work she had hired him to do and I could maybe see the bear.
As Zach diligently worked, I meandered around my mothers' yard admiring all her flowers and the work Zach had already completed. The only sign of a black bear was this one.
I continued my walk admiring this and that, when I began to hear a rustling sound from the brush beyond the lawn. I stopped. I listened. I called to Zach wondering if he had heard it too. Zach stopped. He listened. He said it was only a cat.
"Are you sure about that? It sounds awfully BIG for a cat."
My mind was racing at the thought of a bear just mere feet from me. More rustling sounds came from the thick, heavily treed brush. I couldn't see the bear, but that didn't mean it wasn't there. My heart was quite literally bouncing off the wall of my rib cage.
"Meow. Meow."
It was only a cat. An ordinary, old cat. Maybe I didn't really need to see that mother and her baby after all. My imagination sure had been running wild. How silly of me to get so worked up. Deciding I had probably had enough sun and needing to give my heart rate a chance to come back to normal, I sat down in the passenger front seat of my car. While reviewing the few photos of differing things from my trip around the yard, I felt hot breath on my arm. I heard a kind of deep, inhaling, snort. Quickly I turned around.
Fear the likes of which I have never felt gripped me. I nearly peeed my pants. A BEAR! A BLACK BEAR! IN MY CAR!

I would like to see you when I get home. Going bear hunting? Dozer. That was good. She was the only one laughing.
She climbed right into the car while no one was looking....and she didn't want to get out either!
I'm laughing soooooo hard I am about to pee my pants!!! I can see how you would think she was a bear if you could only hear her! You should hear her snore!! Just stay out of the woods and chances are you won't see the bear. I have been here four years and that was the first bear I had seen...except in a zoo! I am in the woods!
yes, a little house in the big woods, with a big bear-dog. She drools too...Ü
You could write a children's picture book with that one! Such verbage! And emotion! Sort of like 'Blueberries for Sal'....... then with all those wonderful pictures you and your camera take, there are you illustrations to go with the words! When can I expect it out?
Really? Thanks! Would you buy a copy? Ü
HaHaHaHaHahaHaHa...and many smiles! You are so funny! The kids said Whoah!
I'll be the first one on your list to purchase a book......maybe even a half a dozen! Just let me know when :-)
I think you should put this whole blog to book! You are an excellant story teller and a great photog!
I just read your bear story and it cracked me up all over again!

I do so enjoy your storytelling. I think I will buy one of your books too. By the way...how did you get that picture at the top of your blog?
Sheesh everyone....I'm blushing. Ü
Thank you all...if I knew how to go about writing a book I'd do it just for you!
