Litchi chinensis...

Lychee, a member of the soapberry family, is tropical fruit native to southern China. However, we spotted a burgeoning lychee tree yesterday in Nuuanu Valley. G'mpa Kauahi said to be prepared to pay big money to the Chinese man that owns that lychee tree. Getting him to give up his lychee would be like asking the Soviets to give up their bombs.

He then suggested that we check out the Kailua Farmer's Market. He said they might have some of the coveted fruit. So, that's what we did, and bingo! Fresh lychee from the Big Island had arrived that morning. For $5.99 a pound we were able to procure some.

The rough, pink-red rind is easily peeled to reveal the sweet, translucent, flesh of the lychee. It has the feel of a peeled grape and the flavor of a pear. They are juicy and sweet. G'mpa Kauahi, also warned us not to eat too many or we may get "the runs". Thank you G'mpa for the heads up. :o)

Do you like the taste of these? I worked with this man who grew up in Hawaii when I worked at the Christian Book Store. He let me try one in a jello. It was interesting. Here's a random question. Do you like poi?
